Never trained? Good.

That's who the free class is for. Most people who walk in have never done a martial art. Here's what they usually tell us first.

  • “I'm out of shape.”

That's normal. You don't get fit first and then start: class is the workout. You move at your own pace and rest when you need to.

  • “Am I too old for this?”

Sean started at 51 and is a purple belt today. Gene trains at 60. Jiu-jitsu runs on technique and leverage, so it works at any age and size.

  • “I'll get hurt.”

You learn every move step by step, with partners who remember their own first class. Nobody on the mat is there to prove a point.

  • “I'll feel lost.”

Professor Paraíba walks you through it from the first minute. Wear comfortable clothes and we'll take care of the rest.

One academy. Two paths.

Whether you want the best shape of your life or a head start for your kids, there's a class for you. Every class is 60 minutes.

No punches.
No kicks.
Just technique.

A lot of people around Hendersonville have never tried jiu-jitsu, and many think it's violent. It isn't. You learn to control a partner with leverage and timing, not strength or aggression. That's why a 60-year-old and a teenager can train on the same mat, and why so many people use it to learn real self-defense.

Questions before your first class

Do I need experience or to be in shape to start?

No. Most people start with zero experience, and class itself is the workout. You learn step by step and go at your own pace.

Am I too old to start jiu-jitsu?

No. Our students range from kids to adults in their 60s. Sean started at 51 and is a purple belt today, and Gene trains at 60. Jiu-jitsu relies on technique and leverage, not size or strength.

Is jiu-jitsu violent or dangerous?

No punches and no kicks. Jiu-jitsu is about controlling a partner with technique and leverage. Every class is coached, and beginners learn each move step by step.

What should I wear to my free class?

Comfortable workout clothes: a t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants, nothing with zippers. Bring water and arrive about 10 minutes early. We'll take care of the rest.

What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

Gi classes are trained in the traditional jiu-jitsu uniform, a kimono. No-Gi classes are trained in shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard. Both are open to beginners.

How does the free class work?

Pick a day and time on this page and enter your name, phone and email. Your spot is confirmed on the spot. Show up, train with the class, and ask Professor Paraíba anything after.

How much is a membership?

Your first class is free, with no obligation. We'll walk you through the membership options in person after your class.

When are classes?

Monday through Saturday. Adult classes run at noon on weekdays; in the evening on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; at 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM on Tuesday and Thursday; and at 8:00 AM on Saturday. Kids classes are Tuesday and Friday at 6:30 PM and Saturday at 9:30 AM. Sunday is closed.
